Development Pathway

Developers

Upon completion of a successful trial, swimmers will typically begin their club experience here. The programme delivered to swimmers in this squad will be adapted to suit individual requirements, but aims to:

  • Further develop core aquatic skills (such as correct body position and water confidence). Swimmers will consolidate core underwater skills such as streamlining and underwater fly kick.
  • Develop a stronger understanding and performance of all four strokes. In order to meet this objective, sessions will be structured to provide a core stroke focus on a rotational weekly basis.
  • Develop an understanding of safe entry and exit of the pool, including the use of starting blocks.
  • Introduce swimmers to lane etiquette and fundamental skills of competitive swimming. At this level, swimmers will be invited to internal-club time trial evenings in order to gain times in the Club’s database, which will prove to be a useful tool for monitoring their individual progress.
  • Introduce swimmers to performing turns (at the wall), in order to swim consecutively for more than one length at any given time.
  • Develop friendships with other swimmers who they will likely accompany through our pathway.

Swimmers in this squad will be invited to attend twice weekly (amounting to two training hours per week). Typically swimmers in this squad are aged between seven and nine years of age (but this is not exclusive).

Initially, the swimmers in this squad are under the remit of Graeme Davidson, a UKCC Level 2 qualified Swimming Teacher with Falkirk Community Trust learn to swim scheme who works to ensure a smooth entry to Club level swimming.

Once they have developed an understanding of the basic concepts, Ross Stephen, the Club’s Head Coach, oversees swimmers as they further develop core skills, and ultimately prepares them for transition to Improvers. The Assistant coach to this squad is David Farquharson who has recently undertaken his UKCC Level 1 qualification.

You can get involved too….

The club encourages parents and guardians from all squads to get involved – there are a wide range of opportunities. It’s fun and rewarding. If you want to learn more see our volunteering and jobs page.

Improvers

Swimmers who are promoted from the Developers squad will have gained a general, necessary skill base. The club experience for these swimmers continues and they will, in Improvers, progress in their sporting development at Bo’ness A.S.C. The programme delivered to Improvers swimmers will be adapted to suit individual needs. It aims to:

  • Further develop core aquatic skills, notably maintaining buoyancy in the water, correct body position and ensuring that all the swimmers are confident in their abilities in the water.
  • Continue to develop a sound understanding of all four strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl).
  • At this stage, swimmers will be introduced to the legalities of competitive swimming, with a view to being able to perform strokes in accordance with FINA rules. In order to introduce swimmers to competition, they will be invited (on a rotational basis) to attend Forth Valley Junior League Events and local Level 3 competitions (see information in club policies section of the website). In addition, the swimmers will be expected to participate in internal-club time trials. This will promote the notion of competition within the training environment, in addition to providing times for the database which aids the monitoring of individual progress.
  • Develop initial stamina and fitness; building distance swimming, particularly regular 100m swims in training.
  • Regularly allowing swimmers to perform turns (at the wall), in order to swim consecutively for more than one length at any given time.
  • Develop friendships with other swimmers who they will likely accompany through our pathway.

Swimmers in this squad will be invited to train two times weekly (i.e. Thursday evening and Saturday morning), amounting to two hours per week. In addition to this training, swimmers can attend a Monday evening session, though this is not necessarily expected for newly promoted swimmers. Typically, swimmers in this squad will be between the ages of eight and ten (but this is not exclusive). Once swimmers have settled in the squad, there will be an expectation that swimmers complete three sessions weekly in order to fully benefit from the training programme delivered.

The swimmers in this squad are under the remit of Susan Grant, Senior Development Coach. As the squad’s lead coach Susan has successfully completed her UKCC Level 2 Coaching Swimming Qualification.  In addition, Angharad Hopwood and Zoe Huxley offer assistance poolside.

The Forth Valley Junior League

Once they are ready swimmers may find themselves selected to compete in the Forth Valley Junior League (or ‘FVJL’). For more information see here.
